THE MOST INTERESTING FACTS RELATED TO THA YUGAS –
1. Length of each Yuga is: (Satya Yuga) - 17,28,000 human years, Treta Yuga - 12,96,000, Dwapar Yuga - 8,64,000 and Kali Yuga - 4,32,000 years. Together they are called Maha Yuga, where one cycle equals 43,20,000 human years. This goes on forever.
2. One day of Brahma is 1000 such cycles (4,32,00,00,000 human years) and so is his night. So 1 full day (day + night) of Brahma equals 8,64,00,00,000 human years. Similarly he has 100 years of life. After that for 100 brahma years there will be nothing and everything restarts again with a new Brahma. You can do the math here. We are talking about trillions of years. If this is not amazing, Vishnu Purana states that this is just for 1 universe and there are innumerable such universes that emanates from Vishnu. Just think about this, we thought Yugas itself were on a big timescale, but they are just the starting point.
3. Generally, as the Yuga progresses from satya yuga to Kali yuga, age of people, their character etc. will deteriorate. The good part is this; each yuga (depending on the nature and intellect of people) has different ways of attaining mukthi (they are in the decreasing order of complexity). In Krta Yuga (Satya Yuga) it was by penance, Treta Yuga it was sacrifices (Yagnas), Dwapara was worshiping through Poojas and in Kali it is just chanting the Hari name (Nama sankirtan).
4. Technically the Yuga ends once the prescribed number of years for each Yuga is over. Let me explain the yuga calculations based on Srimad Bhagavatam...
1 human year = 1 day of Devas (Indra etc.)
360 human years = 1 year for Devas.
Satya Yuga = 4800 Deva years = 17, 28, 000 human years.
Treta Yuga = 3600 Deva years = 12, 96, 000 human years.
Dwapar Yuga = 8, 64, 000 human years.
Kali Yuga = 4, 32, 000 human years.
5. We have crossed over 5122 years in the current Kaliyuga. Once we complete the quota of 4,32,000 years then Satya Yuga will start.
6. One Mahayuga (4 yugas put together) comprises of 12000 Deva years (43,20,000 human years). Each day of Brahma is divided into 14 Manvantaras. Each manvantara is approximately 71 Maha yugas. We are in the 7th Manvantara of this day of Brahma and are in the 28th cycle of Mahayugas. We have another 43 Mahayugas to go. Then comes the end of the day time for Brahma. This is when 3 worlds, Bhu loka (earthly planets), Bhuvar loka and Swarloka (Indra’s planets) will submerge under water. The life on these planets will resume once Brahma wakes up on his next day.
7. Similarly, Brahma has 360 such days for 1 year and he lives for 100 such years (it will run into Hundreds of Trillions of human years). After this, all the creation including Brahma is absorbed into Lord Vishnu and he goes into Yoganidhra. Lord Siva completely annihilates the entire creation (to set it up for next Brahma). At this point all the 14 worlds, starting from Satya Loka of Brahma until Patala Loka will be destroyed. Kailasa (residence of Lord Siva) and Vaikunta are outside of the realm of time and are untouched forever.
8. This dance of Siva goes on for 100 Brahma years (~100s of Trillions of years). Then Lord Vishnu wakes up from Yoganidhra, creates another Brahma and creation starts. Lord Siva goes to his meditation. This cycle between Lord Vishnu and Lord Siva continues eternally.
9. Lord Krishna in the 6000 year old Bhagawad Gita says:
“Those who understand the cosmic laws know that the Day of Brahma ends after a thousand yugas and the Night of Brahma ends after a thousand yugas...
10. In Kali-yuga vice increases to such a point that at the termination of the yuga the Supreme Lord Himself appears as the Kalki avatara, vanquishes the demons, saves His devotees, and commences another Satya-yuga.
